Fujiseiki's Food Loss Reduction Initiatives
Supporting Food Infrastructure Through Circular Manufacturing
Currently, approximately 1.3 billion tons of food that is still fit for consumption are discarded worldwide each year. At the same time, many people are unable to secure sufficient daily meals, creating a serious global imbalance. Reducing food waste has become one of the highest global priorities. As a company supporting the food system—including onigiri and sushi—Fujiseiki recognizes this challenge and is committed to improving the food cycle through its business activities. To pass on our limited resources to future generations and help realize a more sustainable society, we will continue to take actions that value every single grain of rice.
The pursuit of precision must not lead to waste.
At Fujiseiki, we work every day to develop and fine-tune onigiri machines so that we can deliver delicious onigiri to people around the world. In the pursuit of ideal "fluffiness" and precision, testing involving actual cooking and shaping processes is unavoidable. However, although the rice used in these tests is perfectly safe and of high quality, it was once discarded after use. To address this, we explored ways to give this valuable resource a new purpose. Today, we have achieved a reuse rate of over 90% for rice used in machine testing. Here, we introduce Fujiseiki's initiatives to reduce food loss.
Transforming rice to aromatic "shochu"
Through joint research with Fukuoka Agricultural High School (Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture) and the sake brewery "Shinozaki" (Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture), we developed "Steamed Rice Shochu" using the "rice" from our machine testing. It features a fruity, well-rounded flavor.
Turning every grain of rice into nourishment for new life
We provide Fujiseiki's test rice as a raw material for "Kirara Meal," an eco-friendly feed manufactured by Earth Creative Co., Ltd. (Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture). Kirara Meal is used as feed for pigs and chickens by feed manufacturers.
Fujiseiki's New Challenge
We are currently developing craft beer made using test rice.
Our Commitment: "Every Grain Used in Testing Is Precious Food"
Uncompromising machines, zero food waste production.
At Fujiseiki, behind the scenes of our pursuit of the ideal rice ball, we have been faced with tens of tons of post-test rice annually. While we are addressing food loss by repurposing it into "shochu" and "animal feed," our challenge is not yet over. Our goal is to reduce the remaining 10% to zero. We believe this is our duty as a manufacturer supporting the food infrastructure, and a way of showing respect for the value of food.
"Every single grain from our tests is precious food."
With this fundamental principle in mind, we will accelerate further technological innovation and regional collaboration, striving to achieve a 100% reduction in food loss. We believe that the evolution of rice balls can help lead to a more sustainable future.
